This NIH K08 award provides salary and research support for 3 to 5 years of mentored career development in biomedical, behavioral, or translational research for people with clinical doctoral degrees. It is only for applicants proposing to be the lead investigator on an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary clinical trial. Eligible applicants include many U.S.-based organizations, including nonprofits, universities, governments, and businesses, but foreign organizations and non-U.S. components of U.S. organizations are not eligible, and foreign subawards are not allowed. The award covers salary, fringe benefits, tuition and fees related to career development, research supplies and equipment, travel to research meetings or training, and statistical services; indirect costs are paid at 8% of modified total direct costs, and no cost sharing is required.

The primary purpose of the NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Awards (K08) program is to prepare qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program represents the continuation of a long-standing NIH program that provides support and "protected time" to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree for an intensive, supervised research career development experience in the fields of biomedical and behavioral research, including translational research.
