This NIH K23 award provides salary and research support for 3 to 5 years of protected time for researchers doing patient-oriented research. It is for candidates who will lead an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary clinical trial, and applicants without an independent trial must use a companion funding opportunity. Eligible candidates must have a health-professional doctoral degree, have completed clinical training, and be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent resident by the time of award. The project period may not exceed 5 years, indirect costs are paid at 8% of modified total direct costs, and cost sharing is not required. Foreign organizations are not eligible, and applications with foreign subawards or subcontracts will not be considered for funding.

The purpose of the NIH Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) is to support the career development of individuals with a clinical doctoral degree who have made a commitment to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research.
