This program supports doctoral dissertation research on substance use and substance use disorder for up to two years, with topics aligned to NIDA’s strategic plan or HIV/AIDS research priorities. It is for eligible U.S. organizations, and the dissertation candidate must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or lawful permanent resident by the time of award; foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible. Awards provide up to $50,000 in direct costs per year, with indirect costs reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs, and no cost sharing is required. Clinical trials are not allowed under this award, and applications involving alcohol alone as the misused substance are not responsive.

The goal of this NOFO is to support doctoral candidates from a variety of academic disciplines for up to two years for the completion of the doctoral dissertation research project. Research projects should align with NIDA funding priorities detailed here (https://www.drugabuse.gov/funding/funding-priorities). This award will facilitate the entry of promising new investigators into the field of substance use/substance use disorder (SU(D) research, enhancing the pool of highly talented SU(D) researchers.
