This program funds efforts to improve screening, treatment, referral, and care coordination for maternal mental health and substance use disorders during pregnancy and after birth. It is open to state governments, federally recognized Native American tribal governments, and Native American tribal organizations; individuals are not eligible. HRSA expects to make 2 cooperative agreement awards totaling $1.4 million in FY 2026, with up to $700,000 per award, for a two-year period from 09/30/2026 to 09/29/2028. Applicants must provide at least 10% of total project costs, though this cost-share is waived up to $200,000 for awards to certain U.S. territories and Pacific jurisdictions. The program places particular emphasis on rural communities, Tribal communities, and areas with health professional shortages.

The MMHSUD Program helps improve maternal mental health and substance use disorder outcomes for pregnant and postpartum women by providing obstetric, primary care, and other maternal health providers with timely access to teleconsultation, training, and care coordination support including resource and referrals.
