This program funds high-risk, high-reward lupus research that could make a major impact, and applications must address at least one FY26 lupus focus area. Eligible applicants include U.S. Department of War organizations and foreign or domestic, for-profit or nonprofit, public or private organizations; the principal investigator must be an independent investigator and may be named on only one FY26 lupus impact award application. The program expects to fund about five awards with about $5 million total, with up to $1 million in total costs per award and a maximum project length of four years. Cost sharing is not required, clinical trials are not allowed, and awards are made to organizations rather than individuals.

Summary: This funding mechanism supports high-risk/high-reward research that has the potential to make a major impact in lupus research and/or lupus disease. The emphasis is on impact. Research must address at least one of the fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Lupus Research Program (LRP) Impact Award (IPA) focus areas. This funding mechanism does not allow clinical trials. Distinctive Features: The FY26 LRP IPA encourages, but does not require, preliminary data. An individual may be named as Principal Investigator (PI) on only one application per LRP award mechanism (Idea Award, IPA, Transformative Vision Development Award, Transformative Vision Award), for a maximum of four applications to the FY26 LRP.
