This program funds milestone-driven translational research that moves peer-reviewed basic findings into clinical uses in hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language, including diagnostics, therapeutics, procedures, devices, and prevention approaches. Applicants may be higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, governments, tribal entities, faith-based or community groups, foreign organizations, and other eligible entities, and both new, resubmission, and revision applications are allowed. NIDCD expects about 2 to 3 awards in FY25 with a total of $2 million, and the maximum is less than $500,000 in direct costs per year unless prior approval is obtained; the project period may be up to 5 years. No cost sharing is required, foreign organizations and foreign components are allowed, and renewals or extensions of previously funded work under this initiative are not accepted.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to provide an avenue for basic scientists, clinicians and clinical scientists to jointly initiate and conduct translational research projects which translate basic research findings into clinical tools for better human health. The scope of this FOA includes a range of activities to encourage translation of basic research findings which will impact the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of communication disorders. Connection to the clinical condition must be clearly established and the outcomes of the grant must have practical clinical impact.
