This program supports postdoctoral researchers pursuing mentored training and a transition to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions in cancer research, including independent clinical trials, feasibility studies, or ancillary clinical trials. Applicants must be in mentored postdoctoral positions, have a clinical or research doctorate, and have no more than 6 years of postdoctoral research experience; foreign organizations and foreign subawards are not allowed. The award lasts up to 5 years total, with up to 2 years in the K99 phase and up to 3 years in the R00 phase; the NCI may contribute up to $100,000 per year for K99 salary and up to $30,000 per year for K99 research development costs, while R00 total costs may not exceed $249,000 per year. No cost sharing is required.

The purpose of the NCI Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) program is to facilitate a timely transition of talented postdoctoral researchers with a research and/or clinical doctorate degree from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NCI research support during this transition in order to help awardees to launch competitive, independent research careers.
