This NIH program funds salary and research support for mentored patient-oriented research career development for 3 to 5 years. It is for applicants with a health-professional doctoral degree who have completed clinical training, and multiple PD/PIs are not allowed. The notice does not allow applications proposing an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary clinical trial, though experience in a mentor-led trial is allowed. The total project period may not exceed 5 years, indirect costs are reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs, and no cost sharing is required. Foreign organizations and non-domestic U.S. components are not eligible, but foreign components are allowed.

The purpose of the NIH Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) is to support the career development of individuals with a clinical doctoral degree who have made a commitment to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research.
