This grant funds early stage investigators proposing innovative research in a new direction, and applications must not include preliminary data or clinical trials. It is open to many U.S. and nonprofit, university, government, for-profit, and tribal organizations, but foreign organizations and foreign components are not allowed. Award budgets are not limited and the project period can be up to 5 years, with the number of awards depending on NIH appropriations and the quality of applications. No cost share is required.

The Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant supports an innovative project that represents a change in research direction for an early stage investigator (ESI) and for which no preliminary data exist. Applications submitted to this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) must not include preliminary data. Applications must include a separate attachment describing the change in research direction.
